Shimizu speaks on GRUDGE 2
Principal photography has begun on The Grudge 2, it was announced today by Columbia Pictures and Ghost House Pictures. The film is the much-anticipated sequel to the 2004 hit, which earned $188 million in worldwide box office receipts.
The Grudge 2 delves into the secrets behind the grudge's wrath and introduces a seemingly unrelated host of new characters who find themselves connected by the same terrifying supernatural curse.
Amber Tamblyn (Joan Of Arcadia) heads up the cast, with returning appearances by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Takako Fuji, who will reprise her role as the terrorizing Kayako. Director Takashi Shimizu will once again helm.
Takashi is hard at work on the sequel. A lot of people have been wondering exactly what is going to happen in the sequel and what is up with Sarah Michelle Gellar?
"For The Grudge 2, I was going for this mystery that was never there in Grudge 1, and I think that's going to full fill the audience. There's a secret about Kayako's childhood life, so that's part of the big mystery. And the other mystery is, this grudge will never stop, and it's going to... spread. And how is it going to get spread? That's another mystery."
With this being the 6th Grudge film that Shimizu has filmed you would think he would get sick of doing the same story over and over.
"The Grudge 1 was a complete remake of Ju-On 1, meaning the storyline was very similar," Shimizu said. "Basically, it's the same. But Grudge 2 is actually different from Ju-On 2, and I don't think I would have accepted this job if it was going to be [the] same storyline. And because it was a different story, you know, my motivation was a bit higher, and I actually enjoy doing this."
Filming began in Tokyo this month, with shoots at various locations around the metropolitan area and the famous Toho Studios, the largets soundstages in Japan. The Grudge 2 is scheduled to open in the U.S. on October 20th. The official site was opened but they don't have anything up except a spooky eye.
